Cricket Ireland have suspended training sessions after a player registered a positive test for Covid-19.

The suspension of all the elite men's training sessions is a blow for the four provinces who had began outdoors training sessions last week ahead of the start of the season in less than three weeks time.

A statement from the governing body stated that although the player concerned had been training at only one of the four venues being used, he was a close contact of players using some of the others. Therefore training at all four locations has been suspended.

The player will now be re-tested in case the initial test gave a false positive, while others may be tested too.

The 2021 interprovincial season is due to start on May 1st when defending champions Leinster Lightning face North West Warriors at Sydney Parade.
