Friday the 13th came two weeks late for Irish cricket as the U19s lost by five wickets to complete one of the worst days for Irish cricket in living memory.
To be fair to Ryan Eagleson's young charges they were missing quite a few for a variety of reasons, and were further hampered by injury niggles, which meant a predominantly spin attack in the third and final game against the Free Foresters at Carrickfergus.
Batting first the Irish were in trouble at 25 for 4 and 63 for 6, with Instonians left-arm spinner Cian Robertson - who is just a few days over the age limit for Ireland U19s - taking 3 for 16, while Jafar Chohan also took two scalps.
A seventh wicket stand of 125 between Phillipe Le Roux and Ewan Wilson rescued their side, with Railway Union's Le Roux continuing his rich vein of form as he top scored with 77 from 104 balls (8 fours, 1 six).
Wilson though was the more fluent, taking an aggressive route out of the crisis as he cleared the ropes four times, as well as hitting five fours in his 64 from 58 balls, before being dismissed by another Instonians bowler, Cade Carmichael (2-53).
Ireland did well to reach 209, but with their bowling resources stretched it proved to be not enough as the Foresters top order fired.
Robbie Hardwick hit 9 fours and 3 sixes in a hard-hit 82 from 77 balls, dominating an opening stand of 82 with Dan Holland (25), which was ended by young Clontarf spinner David Vincent (2-32), who also accounted for Ollie Metcalfe.
When another Clontarf bowler John McNally (1-27) dismissed Hardwick, there was a glimmer of an opening at 122 for 3, but any chance soon disappeared in the afternoon sunshine.
David O'Sullivan (46) and Patrick Phillips (34) added 72 for the fourth wicket, before both were dismissed by Scott Macbeth (2-12) with the finishing line in sight.
Ireland travel to Spain in three weeks time for their World Cup Qualifiers, although given the terrible pitches on view (when the stream works), the ICC would be wise to try and source an alternative venue.
