In 1965 Vietnam seemed like just another foreign war, but it wasn't.

It was different in many ways, as so were those that did the fighting

In World War II the average age of the combat soldier was twenty-six

In Vietnam he was nineteen; In inininininin Vietnam he was nineteen

I couldn't get the 1985 number one by Paul Hardcastle out of my head yesterday after seeing the scorecards from the final two matches in the series.

19! It took me years to get over Ardmore being bowled out for 17 in a Senior Cup final, but luckily for the Scorchers it took them a matter of hours to get the match out of their system as they bounced back in the second match of the day.

I've found it hard to get really invested in the competition. I need identity. Some team to really root for. I couldn't tell you who plays for who, nor care who wins.

I do know and follow though nearly all the players, and understand the rationale for having the best play the best on a regular basis.

I just wish a way could have been found to have it on a basis where more buy-in came from others apart from those playing.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, the Scorchers had already an unassailable 3-0 lead when they took the field - the games being played at North Kildare rather than North County for some reason.

Maybe there was a little over-confidence in the ranks as they started their pursuit of just 79 - Orla Prendergast having made 19 and four wickets for Eimear Richardson.

Whatever the reason, in helpful conditions and a pitch that wasn't the best, their innings was soon in tatters.

Player of the Match Ava Canning's (3-1) in-dippers, plus two wickets apiece for Irish skipper Laura Delany, and Celeste Raack - omitted from the Irish T20 WCQ squad - saw them skittled for 19...ouch.

The second game saw a response - although 95 isn't exactly a huge total, it represents untold riches. In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king and all that.

Richardson top scored with 38 and Leah Paul made 23 in their 95 for 5, which proved enough as the ball continued to dominate under leaden skies.

Mary Waldron - one of nine internationals in the Typhoons ranks - top scored with 28, but four wickets for Player of the Match Richardson, and three for Sophie MacMahon ensured the 18-run win.

Ireland head off to Spain shortly to attempt to win a tournament that won't be easy. There won't be any over-confidence with Scotland and The Netherlands both having beaten Ed Joyce's side in games in 2021.

I'll have no problem getting invested in the competition, with national identities and so much at stake. Let us hope I'm not singing Paul Hardcastle again - unless of course, it's the opposition.
