All at CricketEurope pass their condolences to International Umpire Mark Hawthorne and former Woodvale player Gavin on the passing of their father ‘Herbie’who died peacefully at home yesterday aged 90.

Herbie gave years of dedicated service to the Woodvale club acting as Groundsman alongside his friend the late Wally Shannon.

A talented athlete in his youth he could still be found circling the Valley Playing Fields near his Glengormley home when well into his pensionable years.

That he was a lover of all sports is evidenced by the list of ‘heroes’ he named in a Woodvale match programme Q&A feature: Donald Bradman, Muhammad Ali, Roger Bannister, Pat Jennings and Michael Schumacher.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, Gavin and their families at this sad time.

May his gentle soul Rest In Peace.
