Brigade claimed the first senior silverware of the season when they beat Newbuildings by three wickets at Beechgrove on Friday night.

Batting first Newbuildings were dealt an early blow as skipper Gareth McKeegan was run out by a sharp piece of fielding by Kyle Magee.

Johnny Thompson top scored with 33 as he and Mark Hanna (19) added 49, but a final total of 80 for 3 felt under par at the halfway stage.

Brigade too lost their skipper Andy Britton cheaply, but were always in control of the chase.

Kyle Magee (26) batted very sensibly, as he and Ifty Hussain (36) ensured a nerveless chase.

Magee fell to a fine bit of fielding, but Hussain struck five fours before falling with the scores level.

DD Barr struck the first ball of the last over to the boundary to seal what was in truth a relatively comfortable win.

The seven-a-side competition has been a success in its inaugural year providing an excellent platform for sides to get some match practice.

Both sides now can switch their attention to higher profile competitions tomorrow, with Brigade travelling to Bready in the semi-final of the Senior Cup, while Newbuildings host Eglinton in the Faughan Valley Cup.
