NATHAN McGuire is in line to make his North West Warriors debut in the first inter-provincial Trophy game of the season, against the Northern Knights at Bready on August 20.
The Rush teenager, who impressed for Ireland Wolves in the shortest format when given his debut against Scotland last year, has been fast-tracked into senior representative action and is set to be the latest Leinster player to be ‘loaned’ to another team.
Such is the strength of Leinster cricket that Dubliners Harry Tector, now an Ireland international, and Neil Rock have been playing for Northern Knights for the last two seasons and McGuire is set to be a Warrior this season.
The 17-year-old played in the latest North West intra-squad pathway game at Eglinton on Thursday and was given two innings, scoring 25 and 35, dominating and innings his side was dismissed for 109.
New Coleraine signing Will Smale, who played for the Warriors last season, was also involved on Thursday but was dismissed for 0 and 4 in his two innings.
Andrew Austin also impressed in the game with 40 from 35 balls in the winning team’s 149-4.
There will be one more pathway game, back on Eglinton on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Cricket Ireland have announced a packed schedule of youth games to take place over the next two weeks, to make up for the loss of the first three months of the season.
The Ireland Under-17 boys will be first into action with four intra-squad games at Carrick on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and the Girls Under-19s will play at Terenure and Balbriggan on August 18 and 19 respectively.
Games have also been arranged for the Under-15 boys and girls – both were in action yesterday and the remaining girls games are at Rush on August 17 and Terenure on August 21.
Derriaghy will also host four Boys Cubs games from August 17-21. All the youth games are Twenty20 and start at 12noon.
None of the age games clash with the provincial inter-pro action which started on Thursday at Belmont when NCU U17s beat their North West counterparts by six wickets.
Four of the NCU side, Matthew Humphreys, Ewan Wilson, James Rose and Matthew Daly plus Adam Ly are named in the Ireland squad for the pathway games and three of the North West team, Conor King, Stuart Kennedy, Corin Kyte plus Raymond Curry will also be involved next week.
