With the region's first competitive cricket match of the year set to take place at Coleraine next Friday night, the home side have landed something of a coup by adding Niall McDonnell to their ranks for this shortest of seasons.

The top order batsman hasn't had the boots on since leaving Beechgrove in 2018, but is now one of three former players returning to Sandel Lodge for the T20 competition alongside David Cooke and Gareth Burns.

As well as that trio, Will Smale is set to arrive at the club midway through the group stages while the Bannsiders are also boosted by the availability of Graham Hume and Rishi Chopra.

McDonnell adds both quality and experience to the top order having plied his trade at Ireland 'A' and Interprovincial level during his career.

Their latest recruit would suggest that Coleraine are certainly now one of the favourites to compete for the coveted North West senior cup in the coming weeks.
