Life begins at 40 or so they say. They being the over 40's I guess. Anyway we noticed that Andy White turns 40 this year and sought to select a side from those still plying their trade in Irish league cricket.

Instonians regular White with 232 caps would be captain, and who better than to be his deputy than the four-time Irish Cup winner and 227 capped Kyle McCallan, still a pivotal player with Waringstown.

Gary Neely (45) and Decker Curry (53) are still very much involved and among the wickets and runs, helping Ardmore to three trophies in 2019.

The seam bowling department as well as Neely could contain three from the Leinster league, with internationals Allan Eastwood and Naz Shaukat complimented by the ever consistent Joey Morrissey of Clontarf.

Variety in the attack could come in the form of leg-spinner Conor Hoey, who at 51 is still twirling away at College Park and extending his record haul for Trinity.

The batting would be strengthened by Strabane's Peter Gillespie in the middle order, and Donemana's Dwayne McGerrigle who reaches the landmark next month would add power to the batting as well as a more than useful bowler. Another paceman who has turned to spin is Ryan Eagleson, and the Carrickfergus all-rounder would add further quality with his batting.

The much travelled David Cooke and his brother Gordon would bolster the team, with David my choice with the gloves.

Another multi-dimensional cricketer who could fill a variety of roles would be Lisburn's Reinhardt Strydom, who as well as being an attacking opener, is a useful left-arm seamer.

Feel free to send in your suggestions for any I've missed along the way.
