NCU General Manager Angela Platt has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Years Honours list.

She has been honoured for her services to sports development, as she is chairperson of the Female Sports Forum, and vice-chair of the Northern Ireland Sports Forum.

Platt was CEO of Ulster Hockey for seven years, before taking her role with the NCU in April 2017.

A sporting all-rounder, she won 75 caps as Ireland hockey goalkeeper and three for the Northern Ireland football team.

Part of a sporting family her uncle Jim was a goalkeeper for Middlesborough, winning 23 caps for NI, while her brother David played for Derry City and Finn Harps amongst others, while also managing Coleraine and Limavady United.

Speaking on Twitter about the award, Angela said. "Very surprised but honoured to be awarded a BEM in the New Years Honours list for sports development.

"I love what I do and hopefully I can continue to play a part in changing lives through the power of sport.

"Thank you to everyone for your messages of congratulations today."
