DESPITE the late cancellation of the Euro T20 Slam, the Irish Cup final goes ahead as rescheduled on Saturday with Waringstown facing Pembroke at Milverton (11.30am).

After all the will they/won’t they change the date of the final to allow the four players due to be involved in the Slam on August 31, in the end there was no need to bring the showpiece game forward seven days after the midweek decision to call off the Slam because of lack of funds.

Either way, Greg Thompson, the only Waringstown player missing out on the Slam, has been given the chance to become the first captain to lift the trophy three years in a row.

Before last season only North County, in 2008, had retained the Cup. The Villagers have already one Irish Cup record to themselves – this is their fifth successive final. No-other club has even managed three!
