The NCU U-13ís (sponsored by PwC) started their 4 match series against Leinster U-13ís today, Monday 29th July at Ring Commons CC.
After losing the toss Harry Dyerís side was asked to field, Leinster made a solid start of 34 before a great run out was executed by Ben McCausland this was quickly followed by another wicket taken by Jude Keates caught by McCausland.
A third wicket partnership of 47 followed between Riley and Cosgrove and at 90 for 2 after 17 overs Leinster looked set for a big total. The 4 medium/fast bowlers for the NCU struggled a little bit with their consistency but the fielding was excellent.
The introduction of the spin of Dyer had an immediate impact with a wicket in his first over, both he and Sam Allister bowled in tandem and they bowled very tightly.
Allister finished with 2 for 12 and Dyer finished with 5 for 17. James West also picked up a wicket with a smart stumping from George Palmer. Leinster finished up 137 all out.
A solid performance in field by the NCU, due to the innings closing a bit early the NCU openers of Ryan Hunter and Adam Leckey faced a tricky few overs before lunch. The opening overs from Reuben Wilson and Matthew Weldon were very impressive, however, the NCU openers showed great skill and temperament to see the NCU through to lunch without loss.
Hunter and Leckey then put on 46 before Hunter was bowled for 20, Leckey (32) and Dyer (13) put on 29 runs but the Leinster spinners slowed the run rate and when Palmer was dismissed the NCU were 93 for 4 after 26 overs.
Sam Allister and Tom Crothers then put on a match winning partnership of 38. Crothers was the dominant partner exhibited great power with shots all round the ground, he made 37 off 30 balls. Allister fell when the NCU were just 7 runs short but Crothers saw the innings to a successful conclusion in 34th over.
A great start to this series the sides meet again on Tuesday at Stormont and then they are back to Ring Commons on Thursday and finish up back at Stormont on Friday.
