Ulster Schools were bowled out to the last ball of the first day of the annual two-day game with Southern Schools, for a first innings deficit of 59.
David O'Halloran top scored for the South with 56, while there were useful contributions from Nathan McGuire (46) and Sean Stanton (43) as they posted 227.
Matthew Humphreys took 4 for 57, while there were two apiece for James Hunter and Reece Malone.
Left-hander Adam Reid top scored in the Ulster innings with 29, while Reece Malone and Archie Johnston both scored 27.
Scott Ruttle claimed 3 for 33, and the Southern lead of 59 could well prove crucial on the second day.
Meanwhile, an injury doubt has held up the release of the Ireland squad for the Under-19 World Cup qualifiers in the Netherlands. It is now due today.
