PHOENIX completed the perfect weekend yesterday by easing into the second round of the Irish Senior Cup, 24 hours after inflicting a first defeat of the season on Merrion to reach the final of the Leinster League Cup.

Nik Pretorius top scored with 94 in Phoenix’s huge 382-5 against Eglinton and then bowled out the visitors for 199 in the 32nd over, with Gordon Millar taking 5-56. They have North West opposition again in the second round, this time away to league champions Bready.

It was Amish Sidhu’s who bowled Phoenix to victory with a five-wicket haul in a rain-interrupted match on Saturday as Merrion, set 201 to win in 43 overs, were restricted to 150-9.

In next Saturday’s final they will play The Hills, who maintained their 100 per cent record in the competition with a three wickets win a low-scoring game against Pembroke.

The visitors were bowled out for 113 and it was the 44th over before Tomas Rooney-Murphy hit the winning boundary.
