Quite a few comings and goings at Newbuildings ahead of the new season including a change of overseas player--former Ballyspallen wicket-keeper/ batsman Darnell McCallum replacing Clinton Pienaar at the club.
McCallum is an excellent signing; a quality 'keeper and top order batsman that will prove very useful as his new home.
There's a change of captain too; Mark Hanna taking over from Marty Mehaffey who has joined Burndennett.
Dean Mehaffey will ply his trade at The Holm this season but there is better news elsewhere for new skipper Hanna with Todd Killen coming in from Glendermott while Dale Culbert and Rodney Pearson are also believed to be joining the club.
Tommy Thompson is understood to have told Newbuildings he has retired from playing, but Chairman Raymond Mitchell remained upbeat ahead of the new campaign.
"Yes there have been a few changes but it's always best to wait until the start of the season and take things from there" he suggested.
"What we do know is that we will still have a good nucleus of young players around the club- Jason Dunn was excellent for us last year and both Trent McKeegan and Todd Klllen are now in the young Warriors setup.
"We will look to those guys and Cian Wallace to set the standard this time.
"Chris Cooper we'll miss a few games at the start of the season however Peter Allen will be available for much of the year and the likes of Gary Mitchell could also come into the reckoning.
"We were a bit disappointed that a lack of discipline cost us last year however we have talked that through and the boys know what is expected of them this season.
"Newbuildings Cricket Club will work with the North West Cricket Union and the Umpires Association to ensure there is no repeat of that this time.
"We want to welcome people to our ground and be able to enjoy the sport because we have worked hard as a club to get the place ready.
"Just on a final note; we are losing Marty and Dean Mehaffey from the club and we would like to thank the boys for their service. Marty has been here for 8 years-since the club began really- and we wish him and the others well for the new season."
Interesting times ahead for Newbuildings this summer, but as the chairman has suggested, it may be worthwhile waiting until the start of the season to assess their chances.
