Aberdeenshire's overseas player Akshu Fernando is in a critical condition after being hit by a train in his native Sri Lanka at the weekend.

The former U19 Sri Lankan international suffered head trauma and a fractured leg in the incident following a training session at the beach at Mount Lavinia.

His condition is currently being monitored at Colombo's General Hospital Intensive Care Unit.

Fernando hit a maiden century two weeks ago against Moors Sports Club and has played 39 first-class matches to date.

He scored 468 runs for Aberseenshire in 2018, making a hundred against Arbroath, and also took 13 catches.
