Easy wins for USA and Canada on day one
After a one day delay for extra preparation time after Hurricane Florence hit the Carolinas, the final Americas sub-regional qualifier for the 2020 World T20 began today in Morrisville, North Carolina.
The day began with the hosts taking on Panama, the latter winning the toss and surprisingly choosing to bat on a pitch being used for the first time. Ali Khan, fresh from an eye-opening stint in the Caribbean Premier League, struck immediately by bowling Soyeb Chohan with the first ball of the match.
It didn't get much better for the visitors from there on. They batted out their 20 overs, but only scored 65-8. Imran Bulbulia top scored with 25, but only one other batsman was able to reach double figures. The USA then had a simple chase, knocking off the required runs in just 5.2 overs to win by ten wickets, debutant Monank Patel top scored with 45.
In the second match, Belize also batted first after winning the toss, but were bowled out for 42 in 14.3 overs, with just one batsman and extras reaching double figures. Romesh Don took 3-5, whilst Canadian captain Nitish Kumar took three wickets in one over for just one run. The Canadians then knocked off the required runs in just three overs to win by ten wickets.
The tournament continues today with Canada taking on Panama and hosts USA playing Belize.
