Half centuries from Sam Topping and Rory Ellerby helped NCU U13s beat Leinster in their interpro match at Stormont.
The two-match series between the Unions was arranged independently after Cricket Ireland scrapped the U13 interpro series as part of their review of youth cricket, a decision which angered the NCU in particular having invested so heavily in the age-group in recent years.
Batting first, Leinster posted 190 for 6 in their 40 overs, with Phillipe Le Roux hitting seven boundaries in a superb 78 from 88 balls.
He shared a 5th wicket stand of 93 in 16 overs with Macdara Cosgrove, who scored 42.
Harry Dagg chipped in with 23, while Harry Dyer (2-35) was the best of the Junior Knights attack.
Sam Topping hit five boundaries as the Knights started the chase in confident fashion, but Daniel Forkin (1-23) and Srihan Karpe (1-24) applied the brakes and pushed the required rate up towards seven.
Topping (54) added 73 in 63 balls with Rory Ellerby to change the momentum of the contest.
Despite the loss of Topping, Ellerby thumped 9 fours and a six in a brilliant undefeated 66 from just 53 balls, sharing an unbroken 5th wicket stand of 49 in just 28 balls with Ryan Matthews.
Matthews hit four boundaries in his 24 from just 16 balls, as the Knights secured the win with two overs to spare in a text-book run chase.
The teams meet again on Friday at Ringcommons (12 o'clock).
