The domestic action was subsequently left to Championship sides albeit a local bereavement caused the postponement of the match between Ballyspallen and St Johnston. That gave Glendermott and Killyclooney the chance to keep the pressure on at the top and it was the Rectory side who were to take advantage.
A Gordon Montgomery century and 97 from David Cooke were the catalyst for the league leaders to post a massive 310-4; Bob Robinson just one run short of adding his name to the list of half-century makers. The Bee Gees were nowhere to be seen in reply, thanks mainly to a magnificent spell of bowling from Dale Culbert who claimed 6 wickets for 5 runs as the home side were all out for 92.
‘Clooney- so often a side known for stacking up big numbers were undone by one themselves on Saturday as previously struggling Newbuildings hit them for 321. Stephen Wallace played a huge part in that as he made a chanceless 142 before being out in the final over. Dean Mehaffey was excellent too with an impressive 89 at the top of the order as the home side belied their disappointing campaign so far.
The visitors, as expected, gave it a real go in reply with Andre Henry making 73 in his usual flamboyant style, while Andy Lynch and Mark Gordon were also very threatening. In the end though ‘Clooney just ran out of steam- the target proving just too formidable, even for them.
Burndennett added to Drummond’s woes in the day’s other game- Mark Pollock (89) and Mark Roulston (75) in the runs for the Tyrone side as they posted 257-8. Steve Moore with 4 wickets and Jamie Millar with 3 prevented the damage from being any worse.
The Roe Valley men however struggled when it came their turn to bat and Kyle Morrow’s 25 was best of their 161 in reply- Pollock and Ross McCay with three wickets apiece and Roulston with a couple earning the visitors an impressive win.
