Irish Universities secured a superb four-wicket win against Cambridge in their annual match at Fenners as part of the Hone-McGregor tournament thanks to a fine all-round display.

Batting first Cambridge reached 84 for 1 with opener Tom Colverd (31) and Darshan Chohan both looking set.

David Delany (2-28) broke the partnership and with Fiachra Tucker (3-38) running through the middle order, Cambridge were dismissed for 182 with a ball left.

Ross Bryans, Rory Anders and Jack Balbirnie each took a wicket.

The Irish opening pair of Tucker (17) and Gareth Delany (10) put on 31 before both fell in quick succession.

Jack Balbirnie played well for his 43 to get Ireland back on track, but four wickets for Nick Winder left the game in the balance at 103 for 5.

David Delany and Peter Ferguson (33) went on the offensive and their partnership of 53 in just 51 balls swung the game firmly in their favour.

Lisburn's Ferguson was dismissed with 27 needed, but Delany - who hit 8 fours in an unbeaten 45 from 43 balls - and Mick Cotter (11*) ensured the victory.

The Irish are back in action on Wednesday when they take on their Scottish counterparts at the same venue.
