IRISH Senior Cup holders Waringstown and Civil Service North will be the only two NCU teams in the quarter-finals after the union saw five teams bite the dust in the second round.
The victors were the most convincing wins of the day, CSN by nine wickets against Balbriggan with Andre Malan taking four wickets and then scoring 65 not out and Waringstown had eight wickets to spare after bowling out YMCA for just 80.
Strabane, the only North West survivors after the first round, won the closest game, beating Muckamore by one run. The NCU side needed nine off the last over with three wickets left but professional Fahad Iqbal lost the strike and needing a single to tie the scores and win on fewer wickets lost, the Red Caps completed their second run out of the over.
CIYMS was the biggest name to fall, 10 runs short of Merrion’s 273 with skipper Nigel Jones’ century in vain and Instonians could not withstand the loss of Andrew White and James Shannon and they crashed out to Phoenix despite a hundred on debut by Murray Commins.
