Last season’s beaten finalists Merrion are through to the last eight of the Senior Cup after a routine 78-run win at Balbriggan in their rearranged game.

Half centuries from Michael Lewis (pictured) and Niranjan Shankar helped Merrion post 237 for 9 – John Anderson adding late punishment to the Balbriggan bowling with an undefeated 29 from number 10.

Timycen Maruma and Ehtesham Ahmed both captured two wickets.

Balbriggan’s chase never materialised with only Nathan Rooney striking a defiant half century as they were dismissed for 159.

Professional Poonish Mehta took 3 for 14, while Lewis completed a fine all-round display taking four grabs behind the sticks.

Merrion – last winners in 2011 will start the strongest of favourites to reach the semi-finals with a home tie over Terenure, who are currently in freefall, languishing at the foot of Division Two.

That game is down for decision on Sunday June 24, with the other games seeing Clontarf entertaining YMCA, Phoenix hosting Pembroke and Railway Union having home advantage over North County.
