Jack Balbirnie's brilliant century helped DIT retain the Trevor West University trophy as they beat Ulster University by 85 runs at College Park.

The Pembroke all-rounder hit 15 fours and 2 sixes in his 122-ball innings to propel his team to an impressive 295, sharing a match-defining century stand with Danny Hogan who made 77.

Peter Ferguson claimed 4 for 33, while there were two wickets apiece for Peter Eakin and Jamie Millar.

A half century from Ross Bryans (62) and 44 from Northern Knight Adam Dennison kept UU in the hunt, but a five-wicket haul for Nitin Naik (5-37) proved decisive.

Joe Prendergast claimed 3 for 42, while Kashif Shah and Jack Balbirnie took one apiece as UU were dismissed for 210.

The Irish Universities will play a Leprechauns XI later this month before travelling to Fenners for the annual Cambridgeshire Festival.
