Week 3 Roundup
There was plenty of Cricketing action around the Province last weekend with the first rounds of the ISC and National Cup plus League matches as well as two Minor Cup games.
There was no joy for Munster Clubs in the ISC as Cork Harlequins were beaten by 7 wickets by a strong YMCA side while Cork County will feel they had the beating of Strabane only to allow the game to be taken away from them, mainly thanks to a wonderful knock of 82 by Peter Gillespie.
There was better news in the National Cup as both Limerick and Co Kerry advanced with wins over Longford and Ballaghaderreen respectively. They will join Co Galway, who received a bye, in round two. Midleton narrowly missed out to Knockharley by 13 runs. (See Match report).
In League action, Cork County 1 put the disappointment of their narrow ISC defeat to one side as they opened their defense of their Premier Title with a 58 run victory over Co Galway at the Mardyke on Sunday. 55 from Jeremy Benton supported by Cormac Hassett with 39, Nabeel Anjum with 35* and Arron Cawley 34 helped County post 245 all out. Co Galway started promisingly but the loss of wickets at regular intervals meant they were fighting an uphill battle. Captain Kumail Jaffery, with 55 from 80, steadied the ship but wickets continued to fall and Galway came up short.
In Division 1, Co Kerry were put in to bat against Limerick and posted 245 in 44.5 overs. Limerick only managed 15 overs and were 99/4 when the rains came and brought proceedings to a premature end. Limerick winning by 6 wickets on superior NRR.
In Division 2, Midleton went down to Limerick by 3 wickets. Midleton posted 212/10 with 5 batsmen getting in but none being able to go on and build a competitive score. Jamie Spencer was best of the bowlers with 3-47. Limerick chased down the total in 38.3 overs with Safraz Ramay hitting 67 and Umair Akber with 44. Atif Akbar took 4-25.
In Division 3, Lismore recorded their first victory of the season with a 72 run victory over Cork Harlequins 4.
In Minor Cup action, there were wins for Tipperary County 2 and U.C.C. Tipperary defeated Cork Harlequins at Farmer's Cross by 7 wickets while U.C.C. has a 3 wicket win over Waterford & District at the Farm.
