The Northern Knights duo of Nathan Smith and James McCollum were the players to shine on a bitterly cold day at Sydney Parade.

Instonians opening bowler Smith picked up 4 for 33 including the wicket of team-mate James Shannon, as well as Jack Tector, Simi Singh and John Terry.

Waringstown top order batsman made the only half century of the day, continuing his impressive form after spending a successful winter in Australia at the Darren Lehmann Academy.

George Dockrell made an impressive 43 before being retired, while Tyrone Kane scored 24, and Stuart Thompson - who bowled and batted - an unbeaten 23.

The match continues on Friday at Sydney Parade.
