A first defeat for the Seniors on the final match day of the tour.
It may have been so different! If only the off-bail had decided to fall rather than balance on top of the stump from that first delivery of the match by Matthew Foster, who knows what might have happened.
As it was Hendrik Brink took full advantage of his good fortune to smash his way to 86, albeit with another couple of lives generously given by some below average NCU fielding.
The NCU bowling toiled way manfully in the oppressive heat but with Foster leaving the field with a knee twinge at the end of that eventful first over - resources were always going to be stretched.
Luke Allison, Alex Haggan and Aaron Wright all claimed two wickets but with Juan Radenan scoring a century batting at number seven the home side looked set to post a total in excess of 300.
In the end the NCU did well to bowl them out in the 49th over and a total of 281 was not ‘out of sight’ as far as the tourists were concerned.
Any thoughts of an NCU victory were quickly banished however as the top six were quickly dispatched - Olly Metcalfe 11, Harry Warke 0, Jack Burton 5, Aaron Wright 7, Max Burton 8 and Jamie Magowan 0, leaving the innings in pieces at 30-6!
For the second match in a row it was captain Alex Haggan who pitched in with a run-a-ball 60, firstly in partnership with Archie Johnston (17) and then as further wickets fell, with number eleven Luke Allison (18), Haggan finishing not out in a game where the NCU were very much second best on the day, the Boland Invitation XI running out winners by 121 runs.
NCU Senior Academy v Boland Invitation XI, at Oude Libertas, Stellenbosch, 2 April.
Boland XI - 281 (48.1 overs: J Radenan 100, H Brink 86; L Allison 2-23, A Haggan 2-24, A Wright 2-53)
NCU XI - 160 (36.2 overs: A Haggan 60*, L Allison 18, A Johnston17; M Papenfoes 3-12, J Wilson 3-32, M Hull 2-11)
Boland XI win by 121 runs.
In the Junior game it was more high scoring and another comprehensive win for the home side.
NCU Junior Development Squad v Boland Invitation XI, at Van der Stel CC, Stellenbosch, 2 April.
It was hard going for the Junior squad today against a talented Boland XI who scored freely on a fast outfield with smallish boundaries.
The home side had taken the score to 54 before the first NCU success when Adam Kennedy had opener Davids caught by Shane Burke and it was 95 before an Ethan Hanna run out claimed the second.
Things were looking ominous for the tourists with Chemaly and Pienaar scoring freely and it was no surprise when they were retired by the Boland management and others took up the challenge.
A further 92 runs had been added before the NCU managed to ‘take’ another wicket when Carson McCullough held a catch off James Lambert to give the NCU only their third wicket of the six to appear in the book.
Leading wicket-taker for the NCU then was: ‘retired’ with 3 and then 1 wicket each for Kennedy and Lambert and that Ethan Hanna run out.
Spinners Carson McCullough and James Rose were able to exert some control in the middle of the innings and although wicketless it was the tourist’s best period of play in the game. 227-6 then for Boland - an imposing total but a major disappointment will be the continuing stream of extras conceded by the NCU side - 45 today to go with yesterday’s 50!
Having spent three hours in the field in oppressive heat batting was always going to be a challenge and so it proved to be.
The Boland opening attack was penetrating and Ian Nol’s opening 3 wicket burst was enough to rock the NCU on its heels and with Loots Miller’s 2-8 the score at 21-5 was mirroring the Seniors’ performance across town.
The last five wickets went down each putting on about ten runs with Michael Humphreys’ 20 the best effort for the tourists. Nol returned to claim the final wicket and his fourth to give Boland victory by 128 runs.
