After Namibia won their group two weeks ago to qualify for the Africa T20 Cup semi-finals, Kenya started their campaign to join them with a match against Free State at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley.
Kenyan captain Rakep Patel won the toss and put Free State in to bat. Nelson Odhiambo dismissed Karabo Mogotsi in the first over, with the other Odhiambo - Nehemiah - removing the other opener in the fifth over.
Innings from Leus du Plooy and Diego Rosier of 37 and 44 respectively provided the backbone of the Free State innings as they scored 147-7 from their 20 overs. Nehemiah Odhiambo was the pick of the Kenyan bowlers with 4-23.
Kenya soon found themselves struggling in reply with both openers losing their wickets with the score on 10. However a fourth wicket partnership of 93 between Rakep Patel and Collins Obuya swung the game back the way of the Kenyans.
The partnership ended when Patel was bowled by Loyiso Mdasha for 74. Obuya then guided his team home, finishing unbeaten on 43 as Kenya won by six wickets with ten balls to spare.
