Leinster opened the Under 17 interpro series with a convincing 117-run win over their NCU counterparts at Carrickfergus.

Stylish half centuries from Rory McGovern and Alex Stiles formed the backbone of their imposing total of 275 in their 50 overs.

Opener McGovern top scored with 85 from 97 balls (11 fours), while Railway Union's 15 year-old Stiles added to his burgeoning reputation with the innings of the day. He smashed 10 fours and a six in a fluent 74 from only 54 balls.

Leinster looked on course for a total in excess of 300, but were well pegged back by three wickets apiece from James Hunter (3-40) and Jack Carson (3-46).

In reply, Leinster's new ball pairing of Sean Stanton and left-armer Seanan Jones caused the NCU top order all sorts of problems and at 8 for 3, the contest was effectively over.

Max Burton played some lovely shots, hitting some lovely drives and pulls in his 42 which included 7 fours.

James Hunter struck some lusty blows off the spinners as he made an unbeaten 48, but the NCU were all out for 158.

Seanan Jones took 3 for 21, while there were two wickets apiece for Sean Stanton (2-21) and Andy Brawders (2-33).

Leinster can clinch the title idf they beat the NW on Tuesday (11am) at the same venue, while the series finishes when the NCU play NW, also at the same venue on Wed.
