The main news coming out of Somerset yesterday was the international retirement of Marcus Trescothick, but they did have a match yesterday, as part of the Pro ARCH Trophy in the UAE, a pre-season warm-up tournament for five counties also featuring the UAE national side.
Yesterday saw a match between Somerset and the UAE in Abu Dhabi, and Somerset cruised to a relatively easy six wicket win.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, the UAE lost wickets regularly. Khurram Khan was the sole bright spot for them with 67 from 74 balls as the rest of the batting order collapsed around him. The UAE were dismissed for 138 inside 40 overs, Mark Turner the pick of the bowlers with 3/26.
Somerset lost two wickets early on, leaving them on 36/2, but a recovery led by an unbeaten 59 from wicket-keeper Carl Gazzard made the chase a simple task and they reached their target in the 32nd over of their innings. UAE captain Saqib Ali took two wickets late on.
Somerset are playing Sussex today, whilst the UAE's final match in the tournament will be against Yorkshire on Friday.
