The MCC's tour of Uganda has got underway with a match against Uganda A. The tour is probably one of the most important events in Ugandan cricket for a long time, with a strong MCC squad and a tour featuring multi-day cricket as well as one-day cricket.

The MCC won the toss at the Lugogo Oval and chose to bat first. Some tight bowling by the Ugandans had the MCC struggling on 74/5 before an 82 run partnership between Keith Newell (45) and Chris Peploe (50) rescued the innings. It took two excellent catches in the deep to remove them. Some lower order big hitting helped lift the MCC total to 202/9 from their 50 overs. Junior Ruyange was the pick of the Ugandan bowlers with 4/18.

Uganda A didn't bat well against the experienced MCC bowling attack, with only Martin Odenko showing resistance with 34. Only two other batsmen reaching double figures. Jon Wightman was the top MCC bowler with 3/31 as Uganda A were bowled out for 117 inside 35 overs, giving the MCC the 85 run win.

Uganda A bowled well in this match, but their batsmen let them down in their run chase. The tour continues with a two-day match against Uganda Under-19s, building up to a three-day match against the full Ugandan national side. Ugandan captain Joel Olwenyi is predicting a big crowd for that match, and is hoping for at least a draw.
