France and Gibraltar win on opening day
The opening day of the inaugural European Under-23 2nd Division Championship saw France and Gibraltar win over Italy and Germany.
Like their Under-19 team last month, France played their opening match with only ten men. Luis di Giglio took three quick wickets to leave France struggling on 16/4, but their middle order recovered, helped by the Italians giving away 47 in extras. Luca Moscatellini took three further wickets as France were bowled out for 167.
Italy also lost quick wickets at the top of the order, Rameez Ihsan removing the top four to leave them on 25/4. Italy also mounted a recovery, led by Gayashan de Silva with an unbeaten 49. Ihsan took another wicket to finish with a five-wicket haul as Italy were bowled out for 127, France winning by 40 runs.
In the Germany v Gibraltar match, each teams' innings were dominated by one individual performance. For Germany it was Tahir Mahmood who scored 83 in Germany's total of 184. For Gibraltar it was an unbeaten 72 from Iain Latin. There was another contribution in their innings, that of the German team, who gave away 57 in extras, which was the difference between the sides as Gibraltar won by two wickets. Tahir Mahmood took 4/30 to add to his 83 when batting, and was very unlucky to miss being on the winning side, and even unluckier to miss out on the man of the match award.
Today's matches will see Jersey take on Germany, whilst the host team Guernsey will play France.
