BELCO Cup played this weekend
Southampton Rangers will be hoping to win the BELCO Cup for the third consecutive year as the tournament is played this weekend.
The tournament sees the top four teams from the previous years 50-over league premier division compete a knockout tournament, all played in one weekend. This year, the four participants are Southampton Rangers, St David's, Flatts Victoria and Social Club.
The first round matches on Saturday will see Rangers take on Flatt's at St. David's, whilst the other two teams will play at Somerset Cricket Club. The final will be played at St. David's on Sunday.
Prize money is quite substantial in this event, with the winning team getting $1,000. $250 will be paid to the man of the match in each event, and to mark the 5th anniversary of the tournament, extra prizes will be given to any bowler who takes five wickets in an innings. They will receive $500 to donate to a charity of the teams choice and get a $250 credit on their electricity bill.
Southampton Rangers won the inaugural event in 2003, and have also won in 2005 and 2006. Western Stars are the only other team to win the event, winning in 2004. The tournament has added significance this year due to the knockout cup not being played.
