Namibia needed a big innings victory if they were to secure a spot in the final of the Provincial Challenge tournament, but it wasn't to be.
Northerns won the toss and batted first, and reached 358/7 from their allowed 85 overs. Namibia used eight bowlers in all, and they particularly struggled to get past the defences of Pierre de Bruyn, who scored 116. Maurice Aronstam was the next top scorer with 79.
Namibia fell short of Northerns' first innings score, as they struggled against the bowling of Neil Wagner (4/59) and Aaron Phangiso (5/60). Dawid Botha top-scored with 83, and Namibia were bowled out for 252. It would have been less had it not been for a 27 ball innings of 43 from number ten batsman Burton van Rooi.
Maurice Aronstam again batted well for Northerns in their second innings, scoring 125, and putting on a 124 run second wicket partnership with Heinrich Malan (64). But the Namibian bowling had improved greatly from the first innings, and the rest of the Northerns batting line up couldn't stay at the crease. Bjorn Kotze and Nicholaas Scholtz took three wickets each to help bowl out Northerns for 278.
Namibia still had the rather formidable target of 385 to chase down, and they failed miserably. Maurice Aronstam completed a fine all-round performance with five wickets for just ten runs as Namibia collapsed to just 94 all out. Only Gerrie Snyman showed any fight with 40.
Namibia will play the same opposition in a one-day match tomorrow, and they stand a good chance of securing a spot in the semi-final of that competition.
