The career records of the players who will be representing Bermuda, Canada and The Netherlands over the next few weeks suggest that that there are some obvious danger men - and quite a few with something to prove.

Taking the first-class game first, the novelty of the four-day format is obvious enough - apart, of course, from Glamorgan skipper David Hemp, who has played more first-class cricket than all his Bermudan team-mates and Dutch opponents combined.

Star of the Bermudan show have been Clay Smith (right), who has passed fifty seven times in his eleven first-class innings and is averaging an impressive 69.30. Irving Romaine and Janeiro Tucker have also done well with the bat, while the outstanding bowlers have been Dwayne Leverock (with 34 wickets at 23.91), Saleem Mukuddem and Ryan Steede.

Canada, of course, will be without three of their leading batsmen, but one striking feature of their performances so far is the niggardliness of their bowlers - no fewer than six of them have conceded less than three runs an over, while star strike bowler Umar Bhatti, who has taken 45 wickets at 15.75 in just seven games, has also gone for just 3.1 per over.

The Dutch have suffered in the past from the unavailability of senior players, and the fact that they have been in the same pool as the first two Intercontinental Cup winners, Scotland and Ireland. But they have been boosted by the arrival of Ryan ten Doeschate, whose 158 against Kenya in March was the prelude to his most successful year so far. At the end of the 2006 English season his first-class batting average has risen to 44.33; a more worrying statistic is that he now has more first-class wickets than all the other bowlers in the Dutch party combined.

The ODI records suggest that the tri-series should produce some interesting contests: for Bermuda, Romaine, Tucker and wicketkeeper Dean Minors have been the most successful batsmen so far, with Leverock, Mukuddem and Hasan Durham the leading wicket-takers, while Canada's batsmen - apart from the absentees - have struggled in the past. Their leading wicket-taker is Sanjayan Thuraisingham, with nine.

The Netherlands are more experienced in ODIs, although the fact that a larger proportion of their matches have been against Test countries has a negative effect on the statistics.

Veteran all-rounder Tim de Leede will be unavailable for the tri-series, which will provide such talented batsmen as Bas Zuiderent and Daan van Bunge with an opportunity to prove their mettle in a form of the game where they have under-performed in the past. The bowling will be weakened by the absence of Edgar Schiferli and Darron Reekers, but here, too, the challenge will be for the younger bowlers, supported by Billy Stelling, to make their mark on the international stage.
