In what was perhaps a surprise, débutantes Cyprus finished as runners up to Finland in the European Championship Division Four tournament in Belgium in August. They beat Luxembourg and Slovenia, only losing to eventual champions Finland, who thus were promoted to Division Three next year.

It's fair to say that Cyprus were playing in alien conditions in the tournament. The tournament was affected by rain, and the damp weather is hardly what people living under the Mediterranean sun are used to. But Cyprus did manage to set the highest total of the tournament in their win against Luxembourg.

A Cyprus youth team also toured Greece and the Netherlands this year, and it is hoped they will take part in the European age group tournaments next year. An eight team national league has also been set up, and that will come to a finish this weekend as Corfu Tavern and Sri Lankans will fight it out in the final.
