In an interview with the Jakarta post, Sachin Gopalan, the chairman of the newly named Cricket Indonesia, has said that cricket has the potential to become more popular than soccer in the country.

He has also revealed that he is in the process of seeking sponsorship from local companies, and that Indonesia aim to be promoted to associate member of the ICC in 2008. They are currently in the ICC's East-Asia/Pacific development zone. This has meant some extra expense for Indonesia, due to travel costs. To this end, they have requested a move into the Asia development zone, where they will become members of the Asian Cricket Council.

Gopolan told the paper, "If Indonesia were to be placed in the Asia zone, we could take part in more tournaments in the region. We could also benefit from the existing sporting ties with our neighbors such as by making exchanges in training programs".
