Bank holiday Monday saw a game taking place in Mönchengladbach between the NRW state team and the German national team. The reason behind the game was to give the national team a strong work out before they head to Scotland in August for the European Championships, and the NRW team certainly reached that target, pushing Germany all the way.

NRW batted first, reaching a score of 184 all out off 49 overs. Many batsman made a telling contribution, with Prasad from Bonn CC top scoring with an excellent 38. Other good batting performances came from Shani Ali (Bochum CC), Vasee (Dortmund CC) and Tarun (Düsseldorf DSC).

Imran Khan (Bonn CS) and Mahendran (Dortmund) opened the bowling for NRW and restricted the German batsman in the first few overs. The breakthrough came when brothers Vasee and Thiva (both Dortmund CC) came on and took three quick wickets, two of them caught by wicketkeeper Satya (CC Rheinland). Later good bowling from Tarun and Zaheer (Mülheim CC) meant more wickets but Germany closed in on the NRW score, losing six wickets in the process.
It was an excellent day's cricket. Germany, under the captaincy of NRW player Debanik Sengupta, certainly knew that they had been in a game, and NRW can hold their heads up high.

Many of the NRW players will have hopes of taking the step up to international level in the near future, and they will have noticed during this game what it takes to get there.
