Zimbabwe showed those Associate Nations who have qualified for the 2007 World Cup that they won't be defeated easily as they crushed Canada by 143 runs in the opening game of the Tri-Series in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Batting first, Zimbabwe accumulated 218 for the loss of eight wickets in their 50 overs with Man of the match Piet Rinke contributing 72 from just 62 balls. In the previous series against the West Indies Rinke had totalled just 23 runs in six knocks. Only Brendan Taylor, with 37, gave him much support as the Zimbabwean batsmen struggled on a slow pitch in a totally deserted Queen's Park Oval.

Canada began disastrously when Barnett was run out in the first over and then lynchpin John Davison was run out by Zimbabwe skipper Trevor Duffin in the second. By the end of the 5th over things were even worse at 4 for four wickets. The game was over and, although the next three batsmen did manage double figures, Canada could make just 75 as their innings ended in the 29th over.

On the evidence of this match Canada are the weakest of the five Associate nations who have qualified for next year's World Cup in the Caribbean. However, today's match between Canada and Bermuda will help confirm if that is the case.
