Zagreb CC beat Ljubljana CC in low-scoring contest
After two defeats against touring side Morton CC, and cancelled fixtures against Munich CC, Ljubljana CC welcomed Zagreb CC to their Valburga ground, looking to end a losing run against Zagreb CC stretching back three years. Ljubljana won the toss and elected to bat, in a side which saw captain Mark Oman, and international players Urban Blaznik and Lalantha Karunatilake returning to the side for the first time this year.
Hopes of a large total were quickly scotched by a tight bowling performance by the Zagreb bowling attack. Rob Crawford top scored with 40 including a large 6 over the fence and out of the ground. After putting on 58 for the opening stand with Oman, the rest of the Ljubljana CC team capitulated to 102 all out, only Oman and Egon Jakofic reaching double figures (16 and 10 respectively).
As the Zagreb innings unfolded, wickets fell at regular intervals, with stand-in wicketkeeper Tom Furness taking 3 smart catches. Dan Ryan grabbed a brilliant slip chance and Rob Crawford also took 2 catches at 2nd slip. Good tight bowling by Eve, Oman, Ryan and Blaznik kept the pressure on Zagreb until Sunil Kumar and Krešo Franič came together at 5 for 45. Batting sensibly they helped move the score on to 83 for 6 until Brad Eve split the partnership up with a yorker that smashed the leg stump into 3 pieces (pleasing the bowler immensely) and then followed it up with another wicket, again bowled, with his next ball. Obdurate batting eventually saw Zagreb home to a 2 wicket victory.
