UAE book ticket to Zimbabwe with win over Namibia
The main drama of the day may have come at the Nepal v Canada game, but the UAE and Namibia still had their own promotion decider to play at Affies Park today in Windhoek.
The home team's captain Sarel Burger put the visitors into bat after he won the toss, and he made an immediate impact with the ball when he removed Ashfaq Ahmed for a golden duck in the first over of the game. His opposite number Rohan Mustafa was next out in the eighth over, with the UAE on the back foot at 22-2.
Ghulam Shabber and Rameez Shahzad got things back on track with a 71 run partnership, but the meat of the UAE innings came from the fifth wicket pairing of Shaiman Anwar and Muhammad Usman, who put on 120 before the later fell for 59 in the 48th over.
Shaiman Anwar then went on a mini blitz, scoring 20 from his next 6 balls to take his score to 77 before he was out three balls from the end. The final UAE total was 247-6.
Namibia got close in their reply, but in truth never looked like winning the game. Lohan Louwrens scored 43, Craig Williams 54 and Gerhard Erasmus 58, but no other batsman managed to get a decent start. They were bowled out two balls short of their full quota for 228, losing by 19 runs.
UAE and Nepal will play in the final tomorrow, with the winners set to join Ireland, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea and West Indies in Group A of the World Cup Qualifier and the losers playing in Group B against Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Zimbabwe.
