Leinster clinch U17 interpros
Leinster claimed the honours in the Under-17 Interprovincial series this week as the classy southerners clinched the championship with a 98-run verdict over the North West at Carrick on Tuesday.
Having already seen off the hosts a day earlier this win was set up by a powerful batting display led by skipper Andrew Vincent who hit 5 fours and a six in his 82. The Clontarf teenager shared a 113-run stand for the second wicket with Rory McGovern who made a stylish 77 (10 fours and a six).
The batting side weren't finished there either- Andrew Brawders with 45 and Alex Stiles (21) chipping in to a mammoth 291 for 8 from 50 overs.
On a day when the North West bowlers had to work hard for any success Rhys Logue (3-59) and Trent McKeegan (2-49) fared best with William Finlay, Dylan McElhatton and Gregory McFaul all picking up a wicket each.
Runs were hard come by in the second innings and although Jack Macbeth and Marcus Poskitt shared an early 63-run stand for the North West, realistically they were rarely in the hunt. St Johnston opener Macbeth batted really well for his 58 (10 fours) while Poskitt made 31 but it took a good knock of 47 from Finlay (5 fours, 2 sixes) and 18 not out from McElhatton at the end to bring down the margin of defeat.
Seanan Jones (3-33), Mitchell Thompson (3-36) and Aviral Shulka (2-25) all bowled well for Leinster as the North West were all out for 193 leaving Vincent's side convincing tournament winners.
"It was a great two days at Carrickfergus, with the Leinster boys playing some very positive cricket to with the 2017 provincial series.," said Leinster coach Fintan McAllister.
"More pleasing was the fact we were missing six of our leading players who are currently in England with the Ireland u19ís.
"The boys who came into the squad as replacements stepped up immediately and played a key role over the two days. It shows a depth of talent at this age-group within Leinster presently.
"Next week sees this same age-group re-group for further activities and a squad will then be picked for a short tour to Cork to play a Munster select side on July 26th & 27."
